Do you just love the book, "Room on the Broom?" It is one of my favorite books to read around Halloween. I love to have the students get comfortable, pull up close on the rug, and listen as I read with all the voices of the characters!
- There are so many things you can do academically with this book. You can have the students play I spy with vocabulary words for discussion or on a response sheet.
- You can have them talk about how they have also lost items and found them. They could even write about their experiences.
- Make connections with the book such as an experience they have had similar to the witch. Maybe they were able to make friends with someone that was nice to them the way the animals were helpful to her.
- Questioning! What do your students wonder about the witch? Why were the things she lost so important to her?
- What did the dragon think about the beast? What was the beast in reality?
- Maybe you can make simple comprehension questions to go along with the story!
- It's always fun to pull out the 5 Questions or WHO, WHAT, WHY, WHEN, WHERE! Oh, and don't forget how! That's 6, actually! Haha!
- For guided reading, place bookmarks in strategic places in the books that you have passed out to 4-6 students in a small reading stations.
- Set up a VENN diagram on an anchor chart or piece of paper and compare this book to another book you have currently read.
- You can also make connections to self or world.
- This one is my favorite! For visualization, you can read a page to the students and don't let them see it. Have them draw their own picture and compare with what the illustrator drew.
- Nouns! Have students look through the book and find and list all the nouns! List all the people, things, and places.
- Verbs! Look through the book to find and list all the action words!
- Look for vocabulary through the book and make a discussion.
- Play a game with the vocabulary words. Use Candy Land (c) board. Use 3x5 cards to write the vocabulary words. Use dice to move forward instead of the color cards. When the students move forward, have them find the word in the book and discuss the vocabulary! If you prefer, I have a game board you can use.
- Do a running record. As student read, make a check mark for every correct word. This book is a level L, so make sure that it is within the students reading zone.
There are so many things you can do with this book! You can do all of these activities yourself, but if you want to save time, I have all these activities and more already created for you!
In addition, I have included the characters and items to put on popsicle sticks or on felt for a felt board to teach retelling!
